Federal Work-Study
What is Federal Work-Study?
- Work-Study is funding awarded to selected students by the Financial Aid Office as part of their financial aid package.
- Work-Study offers you the opportunity to earn money by working in an on-campus position or at a University-designated non-profit organization without it affecting your financial aid for the following year.
- Your work-study wages are not included when your financial aid need is determined each year. The money you earn, up to the amount of the award, is considered "aid" and money earned above the award amount is considered "income" on your renewal FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) the following year.
- The money you make while working on-campus is not directly applied to your tuition bill. Instead, it is directly deposited into your checking or savings account. It is up to you to decide what you do with the money.
- As a student working on-campus you are required to pay State and Federal taxes, but you are exempt from FICA tax during the academic quarters.
Finding a Work-Study Job
Work-study does not guarantee placement in an on-campus job. As with any job search, there are always positions available, but the skill levels and schedule may not match with your experience and availability. While at DePaul, we strongly encourage you to use the Career Center for all of your internship, job, and career-building needs. The Career Center can help you develop your resume and application, identify positions that match your skills and qualifications, and coach you throughout your job search.
Applying for Work-Study Jobs
- You can start applying for work study jobs once you have enrolled (at least half-time) for classes. Once enrolled, use your Campus Connect ID and password to log-in to the On-Campus Student Employment System, complete an application profile, and search for jobs.
- After you complete your profile, you must apply directly to any jobs you are interested in and qualified for.
Getting Paid
Employees are paid every two weeks. You will receive paychecks as you would any other job, only through direct deposit.
