Networking Questions

Much of the value you gain from networking situations, such as a Career Networking Event, comes from the conversations you have with the presenters and other participants. The below list of questions can help you begin a conversation when you are trying to network.

Working

  • Could you describe a typical work day for me?
  • What skills are required in your position on a day-to-day basis?
  • What parts of your job do you find most challenging?
  • Despite these challenges, what motivates you to remain? What do you find most enjoyable?
  • I'd like to walk through your company and see where and how the work is done. Is that possible?

Industry

  • How do you stay abreast of trends in this field?
  • Is this field growing enough to ensure a continued increase in hiring?
  • Are too many or too few people entering this profession?
  • What developments on the horizon could affect future employment opportunities?
  • Which companies have the best track record for hiring and promoting women, minorities and international students?
  • Are there opportunities for self-employment in this field?

Advancement

  • How did you get your job?
  • If you could start all over again, would you change your career path in any way? Why?
  • What characteristics are essential for success in this field?
