FAQs about Networking Events

What exactly is a Career Networking Event?

A networking event is a gathering of professionals, students and alumni who share career interests and goals. At these events, participants share their expertise and perspectives with one another for the mutual benefit of the participants. These events can be small and informal, or large and more structured. Often professional guests introduce themselves and outline their background before all participants break into smaller groups for more specific conversations about work environments, career paths, and current and future opportunities within certain industries.

How should I dress for a Career Networking Event?

Often the professionals who participate in networking events are coming from their workplaces and will be dressed accordingly. Even though Networking Events are set in a relatively informal atmosphere, please consider dressing in business casual attire. Business casual dress can include slacks, khakis, button down shirts, polo shirts, conservative t-shirts, and clean tennis shoes or dress shoes. Whatever the formality of the event, it's always a good idea to give people you meet a good impression of you by presenting a clean, neat appearance.

Should I bring copies of my resume to a Career Networking Event?

You don't need to bring copies of your resume to these events. Presenters are not usually human resources representatives, or in charge of making hiring decisions-they're working professionals in your field who have volunteered to serve as sources of information and insights for you, not hiring contacts. Feel free to bring business cards with your name on them, or collect business cards from the professionals with whom you meet to follow up with questions or inquiries after the event.
