Recruit Student Employees

As a supervisor at DePaul, you naturally turn to students to help achieve your department's goals, accomplish projects, and ensure that you are fully staffed. The DePaul Career Center approaches student employment through what we call The Ladder of Employment. The Ladder helps students think about their on campus positions as a way to continually build new skills. Responsibilities and wages increase as students move up into higher skill levels and the Career Center offers guidance and resources along the way to keep students moving ahead.

To recruit student employees, follow these six steps:

  1. Post an Open Position
Complete an Employer Profile and fill out the job description through the Career Center's Online Student Employment System. The Career Center will review the job description, approve it and post positions for students to review. Your Job Posting will reach thousands of students seeking jobs.

Need help navigating the system or creating a job description? Want to take a look at the generic job descriptions and pay rates that are available?
  2. View Applications
After the job has been posted for a few days, log back into the Online Student Employment System. View applications for your job posting(s) and compare the details of each applicant and against your job posting.
  3. Confirm Student Employment Eligibility
Please confirm the student met the enrollment eligibility requirements.
  4. Select and Contact 2-3 Candidates
Review the applications and based on qualifications of the positions, call candidates to schedule an interview and make your hiring decision. Do this periodically throughout your search, as students are applying for positions every day.
  5. Close Your Position
Once you have interviewed applicants for the position and have made a hiring decision, go back into the Online Student Employment System. Change the status of your job posting to a closed position.

Help us keep our Student Employment Listings up to date and ensure that students who applied for your position can look for other opportunities by closing your position once it is filled.

Please notify students who were interviewed by your department that they will not be offered the position by telephone phone or with written notice.
  6. Start a Student Employee
Follow the instructions under Hiring, Training and Supervising Student Employees to ensure you are properly following the process.
