University Internship Program (UIP) Employer Guidelines

DePaul University provides services to both DePaul students seeking internship positions and employers seeking highly qualified students to serve as interns. We work with hundreds of employers to help students integrate valuable work experience at your organization with a 4-credit internship course.

The following guidelines will help you determine if your internship position qualifies for the University Internship Program.

Supervision

The position must be supervised by a paid professional within the organization. The supervisor must be willing to spend time working with the student on job-related issues and answering basic questions about company culture, work environment, career paths and other related topics.

Supervisor's Responsibilities

As part of the internship experience, the supervisor agrees to:

  1. complete an evaluation of the student's performance at the end of the quarter to help determine the student's grade for the 4-credit internship course
  2. provide a mentoring relationship
  3. create an environment and culture that fosters learning and development

Fulfillment of Learning Objectives

Every student who earns credit through DePaul's University Internship Program has a minimum set of learning objectives to fulfill, such as understanding their contribution to the organization and learning about career paths within the organization.

Number of Hours

The position requires a minimum of 10 hours of work experience per week and a minimum of 100 hours of total work experience.

Duration of Employment

The position requires the student to work at least 10 consecutive weeks. There may be exceptions to this guideline, such as a student working for an eight-week period for 15 hours per week (total of 120 hours). An employer may choose to employ a student longer than the 8 to 10 weeks required for the program. An employer is not obligated to employ a student whose performance does not meet that employer's minimum standards.
